1. Character sketch of  Susanna.

Susanna was a creative-minded and ambitious girl who was a struggling artist and drew pictures for magazine stories to survive. She was a very caring, helpful, and kind friend of Johnsy. She cared for her so deeply that she nursed her like a mother during the period of her illness. She would give her food and medicines on time and would always talk with her to make her feel that she was not alone. She was a positive–minded girl, yet tender at heart and even emotional. When Johnsy was diagnosed with pneumonia, she wept her heart out but pretended that everything was okay and that Johnsy would get well soon to give her hope and mental strength. She was very selfless and always had a deep concern and worry about Johnsy.  She even took the help of old Behrman to bring her out of negativity.

 2.Character Sketch of Johnsy:

Johnsy was a creative-minded and ambitious girl who was a struggling artist. At first, she was a pessimist and negative-minded girl. When she was diagnosed with pneumonia, she made up her mind that she was not going to get well and that she would die soon. She was so hopeless that she compared her living days to those of withering leaves. She was stubborn and adamant. She refused to change her negative mindset, though Sue and Behrman advised her to have hope in life. Later on, she became a positive-minded girl after observing the surviving leaf on the ivy. She became a self-motivated girl and drew inspiration from the struggling leaf and learnt to struggle and be hopeful. She was regretful and felt bad and sad for being a pessimist and a hopeless person.

 3. Character Sketch of Behrman

Mr. Behrman was a well-experienced painter who had been painting for forty years. He was ambitious. He wanted to paint a masterpiece in his lifetime and always talked about it. He was a friendly and protective neighbour of Sue and Johnsy. He was concerned about their welfare. He was kind and compassionate and was tearful on hearing Johnsy’s health condition. He was an extremely practical person who ridiculed Johnsy’s negativity and silly
