07 - Listening Task 7

Listen and Decide Part 1 You will hear someone making a presentation on preference for different sports among the students of a school.  As you listen, decide which of the given pie charts best matches the information in the presentation.  Tick the correct option.

 Part-1

We carried out a survey to find out the student preferences for various sports.  Statistics indicate that gymnastics and tennis are the least preferred sports among the students with only 11% and 12% of students choosing them respectively as their preferred sports.  As many as one-fifth of all the students surveyed said they liked track and field events as their favorite sport. Soccer seems to be the most popular sport among them.  As many as 30% students described it as their favorite.  Swimming on the other hand was liked by a little over one-fourth of the survey population.

You will now hear the presentation one more time.  As you listen, please check your answer.

Part 2.  You will hear a pedestrian giving directions to a motorist.

As you listen, decide which of the given signs the motorist should take in order to reach her destination.  Tick the correct option.  You will now hear the conversation one more time. As you listen, please check your answer.

But could you give me directions to reach the city centre from here?  I'm kind of lost.  Yes, sure.Take the lane 1 and turn left and go straight for about 5 kilometres and then turn right.  You will reach the city centre.  But wait a minute. I'm afraid that road is under repair.  Why don't you take the lane 2 that takes you first to the library square.  Once there, you could turn left and go straight for about 3 kilometres and you will find the city centre on your left.

You will now hear the presentation one more time.  As you listen, please check your answer.

Part 3.  Herman wants to go on a long trekking expedition to the snowbound Kufri near Shimla.  Listen to an expert's advice and decide which of the given types of shoes Herman should carry with him.  Tick the correct option.

The proper footwear depends on the trek.  Shorter treks can be done in comfortable running shoes, while longer ones, especially in the snowbound areas, require sturdy but lightweight hiking boots that give a good grip and can keep the chill out.  Leather shoes with or without heels are a big no.

You will now hear the advice Herman has got once again.  As you listen, please check your answer.

Part 4. You will hear a water sports enthusiast talking about her favourite water sport.

As you listen, decide which of the given water sports is being described.  Tick the correct option.

Well, I love several water sports. Wave surfing, wind surfing and water skiing, all of which are surface water sports.  But my favourite is the one that combines the elements of both surfing and sailing.  You guessed it right, it's wind surfing.

You will now hear the description one more time.  As you listen, please check your answer.

Part 5.  You will hear someone describe three different species of Indian Deer. (As you listen, decide which deer is being described.  Tick the correct option.

Today, I will describe yet another species of Indian Deer.  It has long antlers, a brown coat and is tailless.  No, it is not the antelope. The antelope has rather twisted but long antlers that are pointed at the tips.  The deer I have in mind looks rather like a sambar but is distinct from it.  It is called the stag or the Kashmir stag to be more precise. It has long, well-spread antlers, each of which has five tines.

You will now hear the description one more time.  As you listen, please check your answer.

That is the end of the listening task.  Thank you for listening.

A Letter to God-CBQA

Lencho’s family behaves with quiet acceptance and courage when the hailstorm destroys their entire harvest. Though they are deeply worried, they do not panic or blame anyone.  The family shows unity and courage in misfortune; instead of complaining, they remain dependent on Lencho’s strength and hope. They even supported his decision to write a letter to God. Most of the families would criticize such an act of starting a correspondence to God and would judge them as lunatic or insane. Lencho’s family trusted Lencho’s decisions and stood by him even when everything seemed hopeless. Their behaviour reflects how rural families often support one another during crises. Their calmness and faith show that strong family support is the greatest comfort in bad times. His wife let him understand the imp...
